"U.N. report says Britain worst place for children"

What does that title say to you?

That the United Nations has conducted a study that says Britain is the worst place in the world for children, right?

What's wrong with that?

It's inaccurate, that's what. Read the report:
UN Report on Children

Britain, according to the study, is the worst place for children "among 21 economically advanced nations". Just above Britain is the USA.

So, if India or China or Uruguay or Ecuador, or - heck - the 100-odd nations that aren't considered among the 21 economically advanced nations eat their children for breakfast it's still Britain that's the monster.

Is this sensationalism or just plain laziness?

Whether it is either of the above, I think it's a clarion call for us to dig deeper. Understand sensationalism. Understand why mass media indulge in it.

Then reject it. Economically. By not clicking the ads on the website (passive). By blogging about it (a bit more active). By posting comments on the site if it allows it and posting comments on sites that blog about it whether it does or not (more active). By making a media brouhaha about "reports" that are incomplete (most active).

Squeak.

Squeak.

Some day, the oil will come.
